At the north West of Sicily, there is Trapani, a little town with so much to see in its surroundings. Trapani in a little town of fishermen, very relaxing and with a nice sea, but what is very special in this province is the multitude of little village very charming that you can visit.
Mozia and the Saline ( salt pans) have an incredible landscape with its windmills, The coastline between Trapani and Marsala in fact is mostly made up of salt pans; strange pale expanses of water and salt, dotted with windmills. Some of the salt pans are still operative, and the windmills, though no longer used for their original purpose of pumping water, sometimes retain their sails. On the shore closest to Mozia, right by a ferry stop, one of the windmills has been made into a shop and visitor center, the Museo del Sale. Another nice place to visit is Castellamare del Golfo with its historic little fishing port has a very picturesque location, below steep mountain slopes, with a handsome curved harbor at the foot of a small headland topped with a castle. San Vito lo capo could be the starting point for to reach the Riserva dello Zingaro, a wonderful nature reserve of 7km that is between Scopello and its Tonnara. In San Vito lo Capo the local specialty is couscous, and San Vito boasts its own food festival: Cous Cous Fest. There's also a festival of kite-flying. The province of Trapani is also famous for its wine the Marsala one, a special kind of sweet wine that you can taste in the different wine shop around the little town. Very characteristic and charming is also Erice a medieval hilltown in such a spectacular, naturally fortified position high above the natural harbor of Trapani, that it is not surprising that the site has been occupied for millennia.
In the Area of Trapani there are also some of the most famous island of Mediterranean sea, Pantelleria and the Egadi Islands, Visitors can relax in a picturesque island piazza on Favignana with a cheap glass of wine, see prehistoric cave-paintings on the little picture-postcard island of Levanzo, or step further from the hectic world on Marettimo, for a leisurely holiday based around swimming and diving in the clear water around the coast, or hill-walking in the island's interior. There is a protected marine reserve around the islands, whose coastal waters contain caves, shipwrecks and rich marine life.
